CORE AERATION
With all the clay in the soil in our area and knowing that the
soil usually tests out at about half of the ideal levels of organic
matter, we have a serious compacting problem.
Whether you rent an aerator or hire out the job, it's a good idea
to aerate once a year to untie soil nutrients and to create growth
pockets for the grass roots in addition to the fact that the cores
on top are dressing the lawn. Abstract lawns core aerates in Spring
and Fall, which are the best times for this process.
SHADE PROBLEMS
If the grass under a tree is not getting about 4 hours of sunlight
daily, it will probably always be stressed and in a decline stage.
Here are some things you can do:
- Prune the tree(s) and hope that it's enough to let adequate
amounts of sunlight through for your grass.
- Plant a shade garden under the tree instead of grass in the
problem area.
- Try seeding it with a new shade cultivar and fight with mother
nature. You may win.
RAKE
In Fall it is very important to keep leaves off of the lawn so
it does not get smothered. In Spring it is really beneficial to
rake your lawn to stand the grass up so air can circulate through
it better. If it gets matted down after the snow melts and is allowed
to lay flat, expect snow mold to develop and start chewing on it.
